Aluminium Front Doors on Domestic or Commercial Premises

Aluminium Doors for Domestic residences: have different sizes of Cylinders and different types of Handles, the Cylinders are usually 60mm or 70mm in length and finished in satin, they normally come with 3-keys for each Cylinder.

The Distance between the Cylinder and the Spindle hole is much Shorter than other types of Handles, sometimes Single Cylinders are used or a Cylinder with a Turn on the inside. Aluminium Doors are normally fitted to a Shop-Front and have either Euro Cylinders or pairs of Screw-In Cylinders. Euro Cylinders for aluminium doors: are usually 60mm or 65mm in length and finished in satin.

Screw-in Cylinders: Come boxed in pairs and come ‘keyed alike’ with 3-Keys, it is possible to fit a Screw-in turn on the inside of the door, changing these cylinders is a skilled job with many Pitfalls for the amateur. Screw-in cylinders are usually only stocked by locksmiths.

Apartment Front Door Locks

Replacing Locks in apartments usually means replacing Locks with a Single Door. If the Apartment is above the Ground Floor then the door should be fitted with Locks that will unlock without the need to use Keys on the inside of the Door, this is to comply with Fire Safety regulations. (regulated by your local council). The types of locks that are typical for apartments are a Euro & Turn usually 70mm in length, the most popular finish is satin, this cylinder is fitted inside a Euro Deadlock or Sash lock. Euro Cylinders come in the following Security Levels - Standard / Break-Secure or Snap-Safe / B.S. One Star / B.S. Three Star.(there isn't a Two Star rating for Cylinders) But there are B.S. Two Star Handles.

Panic Locks: If you have a Panic Lock you should have a Double Euro fitted, when you lock a panic lock with a key, pressing down the Internal Handle will withdraw the latch and the bolt and allow you a safe exit from the property, the External Handle will not, there are many variations of Panic Locks including variations of handle types.

Roller Bolt Locks with Rim Cylinder: A roller bolt lock looks like a typical Yale or Rim Cylinder lock except it does not lock automatically, it has a manual operation to lock and unlock the device from the outside, whilst on the inside, it can be operated by a Lever. Fire Regulations: The reason we have a manual lock is due to fire regulations for apartments above the ground floor. Supposing we lived in an apartment and there was a fire in the building at night, we would unlock our door to leave the building, when we left our apartment and approached the stairs we discovered that our exit was blocked and we would be safer back in our apartment, so we come back and because the locks have a manual operation we can push the door open and go inside. If we had an ordinary Yale-type lock that uses a latch instead of a Bolt the door would have locked automatically on closing and unless we had a key (unlikely) we would be locked out of our place of safety.

British Standard Kitemark on B.S. Euro Cylinder Locks

On its inception the Kitemark Symbol on a Cylinder indicated that it was Manufactured to a High Standard and could also include Pick Protection and Anti-Drill but didn't include new ways that Burglars were using to defeat cylinders, so a new standard was introduced which is denoted by a Kitemark with either a ONE STAR or THREE STARS above the Kitemark, This new Mark (one star) includes all the existing protection with the addition of Snap-safe and is enough to defeat the determined Burglar however the higher (three Star) Cylinders are made for Industrial Protection of high value premises or Homes where Top Security is required. THREE STAR KITEMARKED CYLINDERS have all of the protection that the other Cylinders have but employ a Mechanical Device which Locks the Cam of the Cylinder, the Cylinder cannot now be opened and will require a Locksmith to open the Door.
